Samsung NP300E5Z-A0N Laptop reviewIntroduction:
Samsung know for its android phones, has been in the laptop market for some time now. Their laptops generally are value for money and have good configurations for the price. They still are not as popular as Dell or HP, but I still went for one. This laptop is based on the 2nd gen pentium dual core and comes with 2GB of RAM. I did however, got it upgraded to 4GB DDR3 RAM. More on performance later on.The Package:
The box it came in was oddly large, very wide. Once I opened it, came to know why. It comes with a laptop bag inside the box. Quality is pretty decent, very usable bag but nothing premium. The rest of the package was very standard. The laptop was well secured between 2 pieces of foam padding. Then you get a battery pack, charger and the installation disc.Design and Specifications:
Here are the specifications of this laptop:
- 2nd Gen Intel Pentium Dual core B950 (dual core,2.1GHz)
- 4GB(2x2) DDR3 1333Mhz RAM
- 320GB HDD
- 15.6" LED Display (1366x768 pixels)
- 6 cell battery
- Free DOS
The laptop has a dual color finish. Its got a grey textured surface with dark blue side as well. Not a huge fan of its looks, but its ok, nice to see something different. The surface has a "line" texture, it looks fine, you should not have a very dirty looking laptop as its easy to clean. However, this surface is prone to scratches and with a slight sharp object, it can leave its mark easily.
On the sides you have 2 display options, the older D-sub and the newer HDMI output. You also have the standard USB ports (3 in total),SD card slot, headphone and mic jack.
When you open it up, you see the lovely keyboard. I always liked these kinds, not too sure if they a particular name. I did some bit of typing and it felt fine. The power button has a nice LED around it and it felt firm while pressing. The laptop boots up quick and is not very noisy, but it did get a bit warm at the bottom but should be usable even on your lap. The speakers are pretty good, sufficiently loud and look good as well.Performance and Benchmarks:
So lets see how this laptop performs. You can compare it to the previous gen pentium dual core system since we had earlier reviewed the Asus X42F with very similar specifications. You can find that review here:Asus X42F laptop review - Tech Forum India
Here is the windows experience index score, the Asus X42F scored a 4.5 in this with graphics being the lowest. So from this I did expect to see a slight improvement in gaming benchmarks.
We also saw some minor gains in super pi 1M. This shows that the processor should be slightly faster than the older generation in single threaded apps.Gaming Benchmarks:
Well due to the shortage of time, I just ran 1 test. I played Counter Strike Source and used the inbuilt benchmark for testing. All settings were set to highest. I ran 2 instances, with different resolutions. This was done so that it matches the exact settings we ran on the Asus machine as well as highest resolution on this laptop.
All max settings(1280x720 pixel resolution, same settings on the Asus machine) - 59.43
All max settings(1366x768 pixel resolution) - 53.19
So we can see a pretty noticeable improvement over the previous gen chip. Do take into consideration of the fact that the RAM on this machine is clocked at 1333Mhz Vs 1066Mhz on the Asus. This would have improved the overall performance of the machine.Battery Life:
I ran a HD video in loop, maxed out brightness and speaker volume. The wifi was kept on with a constant internet connection. The battery life turned out to be pretty good. I got more than 2.5hrs of battery life. You can easily extend this by reducing the brightness and other power settings. Conclusion :
Well this was my first samsung laptop and had a good experience using it. The performance was more than sufficient for day to day tasks and it can do it a bit of gaming as well. I did get an additional 2GB RAM(to make it a total of 4GB) which I think is always a good idea since RAM is pretty cheap these days. The laptop cost me Rs22,500
including the extra RAM. Its a pretty good deal, you might get for slightly cheaper, but even then its very VFM. I would give it an 8/10
. The laptop performs very well, but It loses out slightly in the looks department and runs a bit warm.
