so am fed up with copying stuff between my ipad and windows n mac pc in home...

what are your suggestions about network storage devices. since it wont be needing a monitor and input devices after initial setup, what are your thoughts about custom building a network storage device??

pre built ones like this cost 9000 for 2tb without expansion options:
Buy Western Digital My Book Live Home Network Hard Disk Drive 2 TB WDBACG0020HCH  at Best Price in India  - Also find Specifications, Photos,  Features & Reviews

what would be the cost of custom building ones?? will they consume more power compared to pre built ones??

thanks.

I would recommend a pre configured nas.. it has its own line of advantages.

The best in this class are qnap ans synology , but both are quite expensive .... the enclosure alone would cost over 10K minimum.

There are there budget ones from Seagate and Western digital which does the job quite well for home streaming.

Now about building a custom one.

Its basically like building a atom based PC,  Mini -Itx is a very good option for these..  and yes these will definitely consume more power.

You can also go with my setup , i have a Asus RT n16 which has a 500G disk attached to it. and the Tomato firmware i installed also provides DLNA services.. so works fine for me.

apparently custom build ones consume a lot more power than prebuilt nas boxes.

pre builts consume 13w when idle and 30w when maxed out, custom builts use a minimum of 60w that too with low power components...
