For December 2011

Total sales in 2011 till November is around 16.6 crore units of which 54 % where multi SIM mobile phones and more than 1 crore units are smart phones. Samsung leads the mobile phone market (thanks to Android power) with 34. 1 % market share followed by Nokia with 22.4 %. Research In Motion (RIM) makers of Blackberry phones claim the third position with market share of 18.6 %.

Mobile phone sector has recognized an additional revenue arena other than calls and SMS. Data services like 3G has opened a new world to Indian telecom service providers. Reports shows there are around 224 3G handset models from around 26 vendors. Value Added Service (VAS) has accounted to 20 % of the revenue of GSM providers and 32 % of CDMA service providers in 3rd quarter according to TRAI. It was 19 % and 17 % respectively in 2nd quarter.

Now with 4G getting ready, we can only hope there will be some decent speed plans where at least 320 p YouTube trailers can be seen without buffering if not for HD.
