1. VLC PlayerFirst and foremost, most of us use out PC to watch movies and listen to music. If you are a fan of VLC player, it is available in Linux / Ubuntu too.
2. Synaptic Package ManagerYou need to download and install it in latest Ubuntu (11.10). Helps you when Ubuntu Software Center fails you.
3. GIMPThe image editor is unavoidable these days. Some say GIMP can do all that Photoshop does, I don't know about that but GIMP is surely a good tool to have if you are using Linux. You can also get GIMP for Windows if you wish not to use pirated Photoshop or prefer a free, open source tool.
4. Pitivi Video EditorA useful tool in a PC. It is good enough to meet regular needs of an average user.
5. WINEWine helps you run Windows programs (not all) in Ubuntu / Linux. It normally support most common Windows programs without much difficulty.
