Get Lubuntu Desktop Environment (DE) either from lubuntu iso (as an alternative to ubuntu) or if you already have Ubuntu you can use " sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop " and choose Lubuntu instead of Gnome/Unity at login screen.

Lubuntu Desktop being a meta package (lot of packages inside one) it drags in many other apps (default ones for lubuntu) which you might not need if you already have Ubuntu. In that case do "sudo apt-get install lxde" which will only install the basic things ( and  this is what I did as I already have ubuntu ). Google it up for more info. And if you're just installing LXDE then you might have to install lxtask, the task manager for lxde (sudo apt-get install lxtask).

I've 512 MB ram and LXDE works lightning fast on my system. It uses just about 50-80 MB of RAM.
