Card review and model - Powercolor HD 6950 2gb review - Tech Forum India

Ok guys since i upgraded my psu to a seasonic s12II 520w I went ahead with a shader unlock and successfully unlocked my HD 6950.
After a hell lot of research here’s my detailed shader unlock guide.

Tools needed :
Method I
atiwinflash - Download ATI Winflash 2.0.1.14 | techPowerUp
gpu-z - Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.5 | techPowerUp
rbe -http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1962/TechPowerUp_Radeon_Bios_Editor_v1.28.html

Method II
atiwinflash - Download ATI Winflash 2.0.1.14 | techPowerUp
gpu-z - Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.5 | techPowerUp
Mod Bios Script :  http://www.techpowerup.com/wizzard/Mod_BIOS_HD_6950.zip

Increase AMD Overdrive (CCC limits)

Voltage Mod
gpu-z - Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.5 | techPowerUp
rbe -http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1962/TechPowerUp_Radeon_Bios_Editor_v1.28.html
Msi Afterburner - http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/images/MSIAfterburnerSetup220Beta.zip

                                                                                     Method I
1. Change the position of the bios switch to 1 position (i.e. the one furthest away from the crossfire connection.

2. Save the original bios of the card using gpu-z and rename it original.bin. Save this in a secure location as a backup.

3. Using RBE load the bios that you just saved and go to the additional features tab and select the 6970 shader count radio button and save the bios as modded.rom

4. Now open atiwinflash click load image and select the modded.rom file that you just created, click program and this will flash your bios with the modded.rom.

5. After  flashing the program will ask you to reboot select no and manually shutdown the computer, disconnect the power cord for about 20 seconds.
6. Start the computer  run gpu-z and check the shader count it should be 1536.

***IF AFTER UNLOCKING THE CARD BECOMES UNSTABLE YOU WILL HAVE TO FLASH BACK THE ORIGINAL BIOS***

                                                                                 Method II
1. Change the position of the bios switch to 1 position (i.e. the one furthest away from the crossfire connection.
2. Save the original bios of the card using gpu-z and rename it original.bin. Save this in a secure location as a backup.
3. Extract the Mod_BIOS_HD_6950 to a specific folder, copy the original.bin to this folder and run the batch file run.bat and you will be presented with a file named modded.bin inside the same folder.
4. Extract Atiwinflash to C:\atiwinflash (to make things easier in cmd prompt) copy the modded.bin file to this folder.
5. Open cmd prompt run it as administrator and type the foll
a. cd C:\atiwinflash
b. atiwinflash -unlockrom 0 (only in case of locked roms like in the case of Asus cards)
c. atiwinflash -f -p 0 modded.bin
6. After  flashing the program will ask you to reboot select NO and manually shutdown the computer, disconnect the power cord for about 20 seconds.
7. Start the computer  run gpu-z and check the shader count it should be 1536.

***IF AFTER UNLOCKING THE CARD BECOMES UNSTABLE YOU WILL HAVE TO FLASH BACK THE ORIGINAL BIOS***

Increasing AMD Overdrive Limits (CCC limits) to overclock past 840/1325
1. Extract and run racerx v16.exe
2. Go to upper limits and set the gpu and memory clock settings that you would like to set in AMD overdrive (CCClimits). Click create file and save it to a specific location.

3. Open the above file answer yes at the dialog box and restart the computer.
4. After restarting the computer the AMD overdrive (CCC limits) will be modified as per your settings in step 2.  You can then overclock past 840/1325 through AMD overdrive.

Voltage mod using RBE ( Do not change any clocks or fan settings )
1. Load the original bios in RBE and select the clock settings tab

2. Select the clock settings tab and Under voltage registers select GPU registers you will be presented with vid1 vid2 vid3 vid4 denoting the default voltages.

3. In order to change the voltage you will need to modify the voltage value under vid3 or vid4 (which ever is set to 1100mv) on my card i have to modify vid3.

4. Then follow method 1.

Overclocking and voltage mod using MSI Afterburner
1. Download and install MSI  Afterburner 2.2 beta 7
2. Enable unofficial overclocking:
Locate the folder where MSI Afterburner is installed to, open it and locate the CFG file named MSIAfterburner. Right click the file and open with notepad and change the   foll settings near the bottom.
a. UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
b. UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1
After making the above changes save the file before exiting notepad.
3. Run MSIAFterburner and you can change your core and memory clocks.
4. To change voltage go to Settings>General>Unlock voltage control and click ok. You will be asked to restart MSIAfterburner for the changes to take effect, close and restart MSIAfterburner now you can change the voltage.

as for performance  i can play crysis 2 dx11 maxed out without needing to reduce tessellation.
did not even have to increase voltage
